Henkell & Co.: The 2010 financial year ends with a plus in turnover and sales

May 18, 2011

Today the Henkell & Co. Sektkellerei KG published their figures for the 2010 financial year and again recorded a plus in turnover and sales. In the 2010 financial year they sold a total of 20.1 million 9 l cases of sparkling wines, wines and spirits and consequently increased their turnover by 1.1 per cent compared with the previous year. In terms of sales this sparkling wine, wine and spirits group made particularly strong gains of 2.7 per cent to 645.4 million Euros. Of this, 340.7 million Euros were made within Germany and 304.7 million Euros in other countries.

The Group was almost able to maintain its 7.8 per cent increase in sales of sparkling wines from the preceding year with volumes of 13.2 million 9 l cases (a 0.4 per cent reduction). The individual brands developed differently in the process: whereas Kupferberg Gold grew by 17.9 per cent and Söhnlein Brillant remained the best performing brand by volume in the portfolio, the classic Henkell and Fürst von Metternich brands did not reach the outstanding sales results from 2009. In the reporting period the wine segment declined slightly by 2.6 per cent to 2.8 million 9 l cases. The spirits business made strong gains, with turnover rising by 9.0 per cent to a total of 4.1 million 9 l cases.

Wodka Gorbatschow, the German market leader for many years, made a considerable contribution to the excellent results with a plus of 10.1 per cent. With the acquisition of the well known Kuemmerling Herb Liqueur, Fürst Bismarck Doppelkorn (grain spirit) and Jacobi 1880 Old Brandy spirits brands, the Group was also able to extend its spirits expertise. The internationalisation of the Group continued to gain pace in the 2010 financial year: Henkell & Co. prepared the establishment of three import and distribution companies in Latvia, Sweden and the Netherlands, which began operation on 1st January 2011. The Group is now represented in fifteen countries with its own subsidiaries. Throughout the world it is the market leader for sparkling wines in ten countries, for wines in three countries, and also the market leader for vodka in Germany and for gin in Poland.

After a successfully concluded 2010 financial year, in which Henkell & Co. continued to focus on the four pillars of brand, quality, innovation and communication – alongside its internationalisation and acquisition programmes – the Group is now in a healthy position and well-placed to meet the challenges of the future.
