Henkell & Co. Sektkellerei was also able to achieve continued growth in the 2008 financial year. In the last year, Group sales increased by 4.4 per cent to €594.2m. This has established the Group's position as one of the leading European suppliers of sparkling wine, wine and spirits.
On the domestic market sales showed a reduction of 9.7 per cent, down to €307.2m. This development was expected as a consequence of unavoidable price adjustments to meet increased prices for raw material and measures for quality assurance. The Group’s foreign subsidiaries, however, were able to increase their sales by more than 25 per cent to €287m, and consequently made a considerable contribution to the Group’s business results. With a total of 18.4 million 9 l cases, Group sales were also higher than those of the previous year, in spite of the worldwide economic turbulences.
In the sparkling wine market segment, sales were increased by 3.5 per cent to 12.3 million 9 l cases. There was a slight reduction in wine sales from 2.6 to 2.5 million 9 l cases. Sales volumes of spirits were unable to reach the record levels of 2007 due to price increases, and declined by 7.3 per cent to 3.6 million 9 l cases.
The last financial year was one of further consistent internationalisation for the Group: a forward-looking step was the takeover of the important Italian Prosecco D.O.C. and Spumante producer, Mionetto S.p.A. Beyond that, the leading Slovakian wine producer, Vitis Pezinok, was acquired as well as the Polish market leader for gin, Gin Lubuski, in January 2009.
At home and abroad, the brand portfolio was extended by a variety of attractive new products such as Henkell Dosage Zéro or Wodka Gorbatschow Citron. Furthermore the Group invested in eco-friendly technologies, including a state-of-the-art photo-voltaic system for the harnessing of solar energy that went on line 2008 at the Group’s headquarters in Wiesbaden.
